Gastric Balloon: Orbera®

Orbera® is a non-surgical procedure designed for adults with a BMI of 30 to 40

A two-part non-surgical procedure, the Orbera®, or gastric balloon, is temporarily placed into the stomach for six months, taking up space and helping you to eat smaller meals.

Done under a mild sedative, the thin and deflated Orbera® balloon is placed into the stomach using an endoscope. It is then filled with saline until it’s about the size of a grapefruit. The procedure typically takes about 20-30 minutes and patients go home the same day. After six months, the balloon is removed the same way it was placed.

Patients experience rapid weight loss, the majority of which occurs in the first three months. In the Orbera® FDA trial, patients lost three times as much weight with Orbera® than with medical treatment alone. Adjustments to eating habits and efforts to stay active greatly influence results. Nutritional and psychological support is also provided with this procedure.
